Recently I took a voluntary layoff for medical reasons. When I was laid off it was clear that the reason I was?

you shouldn't have taken a layoff, you should have went on short term disability where you had rights under FMLA. I don't know about unions and how different they are then non, but if you take a "layoff" then the company can choose to never bring you back.
