Do Skymiles or Frequent Flyer status get you upgraded to first class?

I will be flying on a business trip soon and I was wondering if it is the amount of sky-miles I have or the number of times I have flown that gets you upgraded to first class for free? I have friends that fly and they usually get upgraded to first class (Delta) and I would obviously like that as well. Thanks for the info.
